The observation deck sealed itself with a resounding clang, plunging the team into near darkness. Emergency lights flickered to life, casting long, distorted shadows across the room. The alarms continued their incessant wail, punctuated by the rhythmic thumping that seemed to resonate from deep within Aethelgard’s core.
“What is happening?” Lyra asked, her voice tight with suppressed anxiety.
The Keeper who had ushered them into the sealed chamber, identified only as “Corvus,” finally spoke, his tone strained. "The Guardian—an entity bound to the other dimension—is attempting to force its way through Aethelgard's defenses."
“And what are the Keepers doing about it?” Aris demanded, his voice laced with frustration.
Corvus hesitated before answering. “We are reinforcing the containment field. It requires… significant energy.”
Kai seized upon this opportunity. "What kind of energy? Where is it coming from?"
Corvus avoided his gaze. "That information is beyond your clearance."
Lyra stepped forward, her voice surprisingly forceful. "He's lying. I can sense the strain on Aethelgard’s power matrix – it’s far greater than necessary for a simple containment breach.”
Corvus visibly flinched at Lyra's accusation. “You presume too much,” he snapped.
“No, I observe,” Lyra retorted. "There's something you aren’t telling us." She turned to Kai. "He’s hiding something about the energy source. Your connection – use it.”
Kai closed his eyes, focusing on the faint psychic residue still lingering within his mind—the fragmented warnings of the voice from beyond. He reached out with his senses, probing for any anomalies in Aethelgard's power flow. It was like navigating a labyrinthine network of energy conduits, each pulsing with raw power.
Then he found it—a hidden channel, siphoning vast amounts of energy from a source that wasn’t native to their dimension. The signature was unmistakable - the same chaotic resonance he had glimpsed in his initial vision.
He opened his eyes, and relayed what he discovered to Lyra and Aris. "They're not just containing the Guardian—they're feeding it," he said, his voice laced with disbelief. “There’s a hidden conduit... drawing power from another dimension.”
Corvus’s face paled. He lunged forward, attempting to silence Kai, but Lyra intercepted him, pushing him back against the wall with unexpected force.
“You were going to betray us,” she accused, her eyes blazing with anger. “The Keepers... they've made a pact. They’re exploiting another dimension for their own power.”
Suddenly, a holographic projection flickered into existence on the observation deck's main screen—a recording of an ancient Keeper addressing a council of elders. The image was grainy and distorted, but the words were clear:
"…the Guardian represents an untapped source of limitless energy. By harnessing its power, we can transcend our limitations and achieve true dominion over reality…"
