The holographic recording ended abruptly, leaving the team in stunned silence. Corvus lay slumped against the wall, his face contorted with a mixture of shame and defiance. The alarms continued their relentless assault on their senses.
“So that’s it,” Aris said quietly, more to himself than anyone else. “The Keepers aren't protectors—they're exploiters.”
Lyra turned to Corvus, her voice dripping with scorn. "You swore an oath to safeguard Aethelgard, to protect our dimension. You betrayed that oath."
Corvus struggled to his feet, a flicker of anger in his eyes. “I acted for the greater good! The power we draw from the Guardian allows us to maintain balance—to shield our reality from threats beyond your comprehension.”
"Balance?" Kai scoffed. "You're feeding it! Strengthening it!"
Suddenly, the chamber shook violently, throwing them off their feet. Cracks spiderwebbed across the viewport, and a new sound joined the cacophony of alarms – a guttural roar that seemed to vibrate through the very foundations of Aethelgard.
“The containment field is failing,” Corvus admitted grimly. “The Guardian is attempting to manifest.”
Lyra took charge, her voice commanding despite the chaos. "We need to disable the energy conduit—cut off its power source."
"That's heavily guarded," Aris pointed out. “And likely protected by Keeper forces loyal to Corvus.”
“Then we’ll have to be discreet,” Lyra replied, a steely glint in her eyes. She turned to Kai. "You're our best hope of navigating the energy network undetected. Use your connection—find us a path."
Kai nodded, closing his eyes once more and reaching out with his senses. The psychic landscape had become turbulent, distorted by the Guardian’s growing presence. He felt a powerful pull, an almost irresistible urge to surrender to its influence. But he resisted, focusing on the fragmented warnings of the voice from beyond—the one that spoke of balance and betrayal.
He detected a hidden access tunnel—a maintenance route used centuries ago before the Keepers sealed off the primary energy conduits. It was their only chance.
"I've found it," Kai said, his voice strained. “A bypass route… but it’s unstable. We won't have much time.”
As they prepared to venture into the unknown depths of Aethelgard, a new figure emerged from the shadows—an elderly Keeper with kind eyes and a weary expression.
"I cannot stand by and allow this treachery to continue," he said, his voice soft but resolute. "I will help you." He extended a hand towards them. “My name is Eldrin. And I remember what it means to be a Guardian.”
