Eldrin led them through the hidden access tunnel, the passage narrow and claustrophobic, illuminated by the faint glow emanating from his staff. The air was thick with dust and the echoes of forgotten ages.
“The original Keepers,” Eldrin explained softly, “they weren’t exploiters like Corvus and his faction. They were Guardians – protectors, bound to this dimension.” He paused, a shadow of sadness crossing his face. “They understood the delicate balance between realities. The Guardian was not meant to be controlled—only respected."
As they navigated the labyrinthine corridors, Kai experienced fragmented flashes of the past—visions of the original Keepers interacting with the Guardian, not as masters and servant, but as partners in a symbiotic relationship. He saw rituals performed, songs sung, a deep reverence for the power they wielded.
"The conduit," Eldrin said suddenly, halting their progress, "it's guarded by automatons – ancient constructs designed to protect Aethelgard’s core systems."
Aris stepped forward, examining the reinforced steel door blocking their path. “Looks like we’ll have to fight our way through.”
“Not necessarily," Eldrin said with a knowing smile. He raised his staff and began chanting in an ancient dialect—a language Kai recognized from his visions of the original Keepers. The symbols etched on Eldrin's staff resonated with the very walls around them, creating a harmonic frequency that seemed to disrupt the automatons’ programming.
The steel door shuddered violently, then swung open with a groan, revealing a chamber filled with deactivated automatons. But in the centre of the room stood one – larger and more ornate than the others—clearly designated as the guardian of the conduit itself. As Eldrin finished his chant, the automaton reactivated, its eyes glowing with an eerie green light.
"The Guardian has corrupted it," Eldrin said grimly. “It's been twisted to serve Corvus’s agenda.”
A fierce battle ensued. Aris and Lyra fought valiantly against the automaton, their skills honed through years of training. Kai, drawing on his connection to the original Keepers, attempted to disrupt the automaton’s programming, but its defences were formidable.
Eldrin continued chanting, attempting to restore the automaton to its original state—a desperate gamble that could either save them or doom them all. "The key," he gasped between phrases, “lies in remembering the oath – the First Oath…the balance…”
