Shadows Across the Veil

The silence following the conduit’s deactivation was unsettling, heavier than any alarm. The team stood in the central chamber of Aethelgard, exhausted but cautiously optimistic. But Eldrin's words hung in the air like a dark omen – "an incursion is coming."

Suddenly, Kai gasped, clutching his head. “I… I can feel it,” he stammered. “A presence… vast and ancient... pushing against the veil.” He stumbled forward, falling to his knees.

Lyra rushed to his side, supporting him as Aris scanned the viewport with a mixture of apprehension and professional alertness. What they saw was initially subtle—a distortion in the background radiation, a ripple in the fabric of spacetime itself. Then, it grew more pronounced – elongated shadows stretching across the void beyond Aethelgard, like grasping tendrils reaching out to claim their prize.

"What is that?" Aris breathed, his voice tight with concern.

Eldrin’s face was grim. "The severance of the conduit… it weakened the veil between realities," he explained. “Corvus' actions didn’t just disrupt Aethelgard; they opened a door." He pointed towards the growing shadows.  "Those are not natural phenomena, nor are they from this dimension."

A holographic projection sprang to life within the chamber – displaying complex energy signatures emanating from the encroaching shadows. The readings were unlike anything Kai had ever encountered—a chaotic blend of raw power and unsettling order.

“It’s like… a swarm,” Kai whispered, his eyes darting across the data streams. “A collective consciousness... feeding on imbalance."

Lyra frowned, analysing the projection. "The energy signature is fluctuating wildly," she observed.  "They're adapting… learning.”

Suddenly, a piercing shriek echoed through Aethelgard—a sound that seemed to vibrate within their very bones. The shadows intensified, coalescing into distinct shapes— amorphous masses of darkness punctuated by glowing, malevolent eyes.

“They’ve detected us,” Aris stated grimly. “And they're coming.”

Eldrin looked at each of them in turn, his gaze filled with a weary resolve. "Prepare yourselves," he said.  "The Incursion has begun."
